Frequency fingerprints increase crime-fighting powerAudio and video recordings are important sources of evidence in criminal investigations, especially as more electronic devices are in use now than ever before. However, for recordings to be admissible, investigators often need to determine the time they were made, which can be difficult. Now, a team led by Vrizlynn Thing at the A*STAR Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R), in collaboration with the Singapore Police Force, has developed an impressive new system that reliably estimates the time of recordings by identifying small fluctuations in the frequency of the electrical power grid. The ‘electrical network frequency’ (ENF) of power grids is centered around 50 or 60 Hertz, and is picked up in audio recordings as a background hum. The ENF shifts up and down randomly, which provides each recording with a unique fingerprint that can be compared to the long-term records captured continuously and maintained at forensic labs.“The random fluctuations are consistent across different places within the same power grid,” explains team member Lilei Zheng. “As a consequence, recordings captured in different places at the same time will have ENF fingerprints showing the same fluctuations.”By visually inspecting the ENF, human investigators can reliably match recorded fluctuations to a time in the long-term records, but this is a laborious task best done by a computer. In response, the I2R team developed a similarity criterion called bitwise similarity (bSim) that mimics the way humans judge the similarity of two signals. The team tested bSim by using it to identify the timing of 187 audio recordings made around Singapore using various mobile phones. They found that bSim greatly outperformed previous similarity metrics, which were thrown into doubt by small deviations even when the general shapes of the signals were clearly similar. “bSim enables us to focus our attention on the overlapped parts instead of being drawn away by the deviated parts,” says Zheng.WRITTEN By DH DH

Microtubule bridges organize the cytoskeletons of cells in the early embryo

Scientists at A*STAR have discovered how cells in the nascent embryo organize the ‘bones’ that make up the skeleton, known as microtubules. While this discovery has resolved one mystery, it also raises a range of new questions.

“This was a chance discovery. It’s not something we or others could have hypothesized based on previous work,” says Nicolas Plachta of A*STAR’s Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology, who led the study. A structure known as the centrosome serves as a microtubule-organizing center (MTOC) in most animal cells, including older embryos. Plachta’s team was examining the microtubules during the first few cell divisions in mouse embryos, which lack centrosomes, when they noticed that neighboring cells were connected by microtubule bridges. Microtubule bridges usually form between dividing cells during mitosis, but they are normally broken down afterwards. “But these were retained, so that got us interested,” says Plachta. “Is there something special about these bridges and these cells in the early embryo?”

To find out, Plachta’s team disrupted the bridges with a laser pulse. This led to the breakdown of microtubules in the cells and a change in cell shape. Destroying the MTOC in other cells has similar consequences, suggesting to the team that the bridges may substitute for the MTOC in the early embryo.

Further observation revealed that the bridges grew outwards from the center of the cell during division and then back into the cells afterward. A network of microtubules grew out of each bridge, and the bridge and network proved to be crucial for the transport of adhesive proteins to the cell membrane.

The team is also investigating why the bridges persist rather than breaking down as they do in other cells. “We think that the mechanisms that normally cut the bridges — the proteins and molecular machinery — are all there in the early embryo, but just aren’t active. Something represses them in the early embryo,” explains Plachta.

In addition to organizing microtubule growth and providing a scaffold for transport, these bridges may also mechanically connect embryonic cells to coordinate the dynamics of their growth and division during development. “We don't know much about that at the moment, but we’re studying how it might work,” says Plachta. “Each cell is connected to its sister through this shared skeleton. When a cell changes shape or gets squeezed, how does the microtubule skeleton change in that cell and in the sister cell connected to it?”

BONYEZA APO CHINI KAMA HUJAIONA IYO VIDEO ILI UIDOWNLOAD SASA IVI
Superpowered Chinese Lasers Could Soon Rip Open Raw Vacuum

Physicists are getting close to building lasers powerful enough to rip matter out of a vacuum.

According to a report published Jan. 24 in the journal Science, a team of Chinese scientists is getting ready to start construction this year on a 100-petawatt laser in Shanghai known as the Station of Extreme Light, or SEL. That puts them at the front of a wide field of scientists around the world who are working to realize a prediction published in the journal Physical Review Letters in 2010 by a team of American and French physicists that a sufficiently powerful laser could cause electrons to appear out of a vacuum.

It might seem weird to imagine that electrons could appear out of empty space. But it makes a lot more sense in light of a strange claim of quantum electrodynamics: "Empty" space isn't empty at all, but rather is made up of densely packed pairs of matter and antimatter. Those pairs tightly fill up the gaps between everything, quantum electrodynamics states — they just don't interact in any noticeable way with the rest of the universe, because they cancel one another out. [The 18 Biggest Unsolved Mysteries in Physics]

So it's easier to consider that the Chinese laser won't so much create matter, as cause it to enter the world humans can perceive. Its powerful pulses of energy will cause electrons to separate from their antimatter twins, positrons, in ways researchers can detect.

Building a laser powerful enough to do this, though, is a difficult (and expensive) technical challenge. One hundred petawatts, as Science reported, is about 10,000 times more energy than there is in all the world's electrical grids combined.

A smaller Chinese laser, the Shanghai Superintense Ultrafast Laser Facility, could achieve 10 petawatts by the end of this year. (That's 1,000 times the power of all the world's grids.) So how can lasers reach these enormous power levels?

As the authors of the report in the journal Science explained, power is a function of two things: energy and time. Release a joule of energy over the course of 1 second, and that's 1 watt. Release a joule over the course of 1 hour, and that's just 0.28 milliwatts (28 hundred-thousandths of a watt). But release that joule in just 1-millionth of a second, and that's 1 million watts, or 1 megawatt.

All superpowered lasers rely in some way or another on releasing large amounts of energy over short periods of time, amplifying it and bending the beams such that all of that energy arrives at its target over the course of an even shorter period of time, the Science article reported.

By 2023, the SEL could strike targets just 3 micrometers (3-millionths of a meter, or the width of an E. coli bacterium) across with 100 petawatts of power, according to the report in Science.

For more technical details on how that laser would work, how other laser projects around the world compare and why the U.S. lags so far behind, check out Science's full report.

Apple sold fewer iPhones but made more money thanks to the iPhone X

Apple’s first quarterly earnings reports for 2018 are in, and the company has reported that it sold 77.3 million iPhones in Q1 2018 (which includes the holiday season). That number is down 1.24 percent year over year from last year (78.3 million). But despite the slump in sales, iPhone revenue increased overall year over year, up 11.69 percent from $54.38 billion to $61.58 billion.

While predictions for the average sale price of iPhone units sold during the quarter ranged from $710 to $755, the actual ASP was $796 (compared to $694 in Q1 2017), which directly explains the increase of revenue despite the decrease in sales. That said, despite the record revenue, analysts were still expecting a slight increase of approximately 1.5 percent year over year for units shipped, not a decrease.

Total sales are up 13 percent year over year for the company, with Apple posting quarterly revenue of $88.3 billion. According to Apple CEO Tim Cook, the “iPhone X surpassed our expectations and has been our top-selling iPhone every week since it shipped in November,” which likely contributed to the shift in numbers. Apple may have sold fewer iPhones, but the ones it is selling are the most expensive yet

Chrome OS is almost ready to replace Android on tablets

Chrome OS is almost ready to replace Android on tablets

Google’s latest Chrome update, version 64, is now making its way to Chromebooks with a number of much-needed, tablet-focused features. Those include a new split-screen feature for multitasking while in tablet mode, and a screenshot feature borrowed from Android, as noted by 9to5Google. While these are relatively standard upgrades, they do paint a picture of the future of Chrome OS as the rightful replacement for Android tablet software. As it stands now, Chrome OS is very close to taking up the mantle there, and features like this push it ever closer to becoming the hybrid OS for all types of Google-powered screens.

This has been in the works for quite a while as Google’s Chrome and Android teams have coordinated closely to ensure the influx of low-cost, hybrid computing devices like 2-in-1 Chromebooks get the best of both worlds. There is, of course, Android app compatibility on Chrome OS, an initiative that first arrived somewhat half-baked last year and has taken months to fully jell as Google worked out the kinks. For instance, just last month Google added the ability for Android apps on Chromebooks run in the background. In July of last year, Google also began embarking on a touch-focused redesign of Chrome OS to make the software more functional in tablet mode.

GOOGLE HAS BEEN MERGING CERTAIN ASPECTS OF ANDROID AND CHROME OS FOR YEARS

We’re likely not getting the full-blown merging of the two divisions and their respective platforms anytime soon, or perhaps ever, as Google has played with the idea for years without ever seeming to decide that one platform should supersede the other. In essence, however, Android remains Google’s dominant mobile OS, while Chrome OS has been taking on more responsibility as Chromebooks have steadily become more capable and tablet-like.

But this wondrous future of a perfect blend of mobile, tablet, and PC operating systems in a hardware package that converts on the fly is still frustratingly out of reach. Features like split-screen in tablet mode are great, and the absence of that feature was one of the main criticisms we had of Google’s flashy and expensive new Pixelbook 2-in-1, which arrived back in October. But Android apps on Chrome aren’t as flexible as they could be across all computing formats, as they still lack adequate stylus support.

Still, it’s clear the vision Google has here is for tablets, 2-in-1s, and standard Chromebook laptops to become one unified device category powered by Chrome OS. Yet another clue suggesting the strategy arrived last week with a now-deleted image of an Acer tablet running Chrome OS, which would make it the first standalone tablet device to do so. The image, snapped at the technology and education expo in London, means we may get a Google or even Pixel-branded Chrome OS tablet in the near future, perhaps unveiled at Google I/O in May. That would only further solidify the company’s ambitions to have Chrome power all classes of devices beyond the smartphone.

No, you don’t need a voice-controlled printer in your life

No, you don’t need a voice-controlled printer in your life

Voice assistants are all the rage right now — Amazon’s Alexa and Google’s Assistant are popping up in every connected gadget you can think of, from thermostats to refrigerators to headphones. This week, HP announced that it plans to bring voice assistant compatibility to its line of printers. They will work with Alexa, Google Assistant, and Microsoft’s Cortana (cute that HP is throwing Microsoft a bone here).

The company says that you can use a voice assistant to ask the printer to spit things out like a to-do list, calendar, graph paper, Sudoku puzzle, or a coloring page with a cartoon character’s outline on it. HP’s global head of home printing, Anneliese Olson, says “Our tests with customers show that they want to print whenever, wherever.”

That certainly sounds like something an executive at a company that makes printers and ink for those printers would say, because I can’t think of a single reason why I’d want to ask Alexa to print something out, and I use Alexa in my home all the time. Printing out a to-do list that’s already on my phone is a complete waste of paper, and any parent knows that a full coloring book costs less than a buck and printing out a page at a time from an inkjet printer would cost a fortune and take forever. None of this sounds like it’d be easier to do with my voice instead of just using my phone or computer to print something out either.

ALL OF THE THINGS HP WANTS YOU TO PRINT BY VOICE ARE EITHER UNNECESSARY OR EASIER TO DO FROM A PHONE OR COMPUTER

HP says that in the future, printers will have voice assistants baked into them, so you won’t need a separate speaker like an Echo or Google Home to control it by voice. You could then use your voice to add the printer to your network (have fun dictating a 16-character alphanumeric Wi-Fi password to your printer) or ask it how much ink is left in it, which it almost surely will tell you on the display that’s already there. HP also imagines a world where your voice assistant knows so much about your life that it will proactively print boarding passes for your flight just before it’s time to leave for the airport. Too bad those same boarding passes have been on our phones for years already and require no ink or paper.

All of this just smacks of HP trying to make its printers relevant to the hot tech of the moment, when, in fact, they are still just inkjet printers that most of us use maybe once a year. The one place where printers do still get used a lot is in the office, but wisely, HP has not tried to make the case that its voice-controlled printers belong there, because that would surely be a nightmare for everyone involved.

Printers aren’t the only products that don’t need voice control, but will get it anyway because it’s the fad of the moment. Alexa has shown up in bathroom mirrors, smoke alarms, and even the Big Mouth Billy Bass, none of which make a compelling argument for why it needs to be there. We’ll likely see Alexa and the other voice assistants get forced into more unnecessary gadgets as we figure out exactly how we want to use these services in our lives.

But I can tell you this much: I don’t want to talk to my printer.

Microsoft drops Surface Book 2 price to $1,199 with less storage

Microsoft drops Surface Book 2 price to $1,199 with less storage

Microsoft introduced a new Surface Laptop model earlier today to bring its pricing down, and now the company is doing the same to its new Surface Book 2. While the Surface Book 2 only launched in November, the new base model price is $1,199 for the 13.5-inch version. That includes an Intel Core i5 processor, 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage. The previous cheapest Surface Book 2 was $1,499 with more storage (256GB), so Microsoft has cut some space to bring the price down by $300.

Microsoft has consistently marketed the Surface Book 2 as a powerful laptop, and 128GB of storage will mean some people will have to consider external storage solutions for photo or video editing tasks. Still, a $300 saving for less storage could appeal to a lot more people now. One of the big criticisms of Microsoft’s recent Surface devices has been price, and the company is now making its Surface Laptop and Surface Book 2 more affordable if you’re willing to compromise on specs. No changes are being made to the 15-inch models, but they are continuing to be made available in even more countries.

Both of today’s pricing changes come just two days after Microsoft revealed its Surface revenue had only increased 1 percent year-over-year in the latest holiday quarter. It was a surprising revelation, especially as the company refreshed its Surface Pro earlier in 2017 and launched the new Surface Laptop. Microsoft launched its Surface Book 2 partway through the recent quarter, but it’s clear the company wants to generate more sales across its devices and push its Surface revenue up through pure sales rather than relying on the margins it was hoping for initially.

YouTube will start labeling videos from state-funded broadcasters

YouTube will start labeling videos it identifies as coming from state-funded broadcasters starting today. Under the changes, PBS, for example, would carry a label that states it’s a “publicly funded American broadcaster.” The move will affect a variety of sources and is designed to curb the spread of misinformation. The label will also link to the news publisher’s Wikipedia page. “We’re rolling out this feature to viewers in the US for now, and we don’t expect it to be perfect,” YouTube said in a blog post.

Of particular note, the changes will affect RT. YouTube has become a major platform for the Russian state news organization, and under the new policy, RT’s videos would have a clarifying label that states, “RT is funded in whole or in part by the Russian government.”

RT claims it is the most-watched news channel on YouTube, with over 5 billion combined views based on its 20 or so channels including RT America and RT Sport. RT has been described as Russia’s English-language propaganda outlet that aggressively pushes a pro-Kremlin perspective. US officials have also reportedly accused the network of helping swing the 2016 US election.

How I Switched from iOS to Android and I’m Enjoying It

Recently I was so disappointed by Apple that I decided to switch from iOS to Android. I was an iPhone user for many years, starting from the iPhone 3G. I always loved the image of Apple as a maker of products for the creative professionals?—?designers, visual artists, musicians: “the troublemakers, the rebels”. But I think this narrative is now over, and Apple lost its touch with their former main user base. They are now all about money and they are focusing on making “premium” products for the rich people, and that's it. Good for them. Now every middle manager want to use a MacBook in their mostly PCs companies, because it’s a symbol of status today. And they are using it to just run Outlook and Microsoft Office.

Remember Vertu? The company, which was selling shitty phones in gold for the rich? It’s now bankrupt.
While prices for the Apple’s devices went up, the quality of their software hit unpredictable lows. iOS 11 has so many bugs it’s unbelievable, not to mention the recent serious security problems with MacOS and HomeKit.

And of course there’s the situation with slowing down old devices on purpose. With recent software updates Apple decided to slow down devices with old batteries to prevent the plague of unexpected shutdowns.

They are saying it’s to deliver better experience to the users. But it’s like treating desintery with cholera, and without patient’s consent.
After Apple’s apology many people are ready to forgive them, but I think this is serious and needs legal investigation. (They will have some trouble because of it in the European Union at least, because we still care about customer rights here.) There were no unexpected shutdowns with iPhones 3G or 4. I was using my iPhone 4 for almost 4 years without such problems. And while there is a battery replacement program for some iPhones 6s (up to 3 years after the purchase), why not for the iPhones 6 and later models, if they are affected with the same problem?

I don’t believe in planned obsolescence conspiracy, but I think there is something not quite right with power management in iOS 11 on older devices, which Apple don’t want to admit. Apple is a capitalist machine looking for infinite growth and they are always focusing on new devices and new features. Last year things are already obsolete for them. Perhaps they didn’t have time to test properly on older devices in real life situations, and they didn’t care, because it’s not a priority for them, and deadlines to deliver new stuff are tight. And now they are paying the price for it.

I still prefer MacOS to Windows, and it’s hard for me to leave this platform, because a lot of software I use is available only on the Mac (like Sketch). But I’ve decided that my new mobile device will be an Android device, and so far I’m happy with it.

New WhatsApp update makes it easier to ignore your friends

Looks like WhatsApp is ramping up performance with its new update. The messaging app has never been so functional, as evidenced by its new update, which now lets you ignore your friends more easily.

Perhaps the most important part of the update is the “unsend” option, which lets you take back what you said as long as your friend didn’t see the message. If you’ve ever sent out an angry message and instantly regretted it, you’ll love this feature, which lets you delete a sent message with one relieved click. Of course, this will only work if your friend hasn’t already read it, so you’d better be quick on the trigger after you fly off the handle.

Another interesting feature coming with this update is the ability to watch YouTube videos inside WhatsApp. If someone sends you a video, you can instantly play it inside the app and still be able to switch between conversations with a picture-in-picture display.

MOTOROLA MOTO X4 ANDROID ONE REVIEW: A NEXUS BY ANY OTHER NAME

oogle’s Pixel smartphones, which effectively replaced the Nexus line, have received critical acclaim for their design, performance, and mostly, their cameras. But that acclaim has come at a price: the Pixel phones start at $649 and can cost almost $1,000, depending on configurations.

That’s been a tough pill for many fans of the prior Nexus phones to swallow, as they frequently offered a lot of specs and performance for a lot less money than other smartphones. You could realistically get a great Nexus phone for under $500 without having to give up the traits that make them great: clean software, fast performance, and timely updates.

Enter Motorola’s new Moto X4 Android One smartphone. While not technically a Nexus phone, it shares many of the same qualities that made the Nexus line so loved. Clean build of Android? Check. Promise of fast updates and years of software support? Check. Reasonable cost? Check.

The $399 X4 won’t appeal to everyone. It’s not meant to compete with the Pixel or other premium phone in terms of features or performance, and its biggest limitation is that it’s only available on Google’s own Project Fi network. (Though it comes unlocked and works with other networks, the only way to buy this flavor of X4 is to be a Fi customer.) But if you’ve been holding on to that aging Nexus 5X hoping something would come along and pick up its mantle, the Moto X4 Android One version is it.

Facebook fatigue: Are we turning off the social network?

In May 2016 - less than two years ago - Facebook boasted that people spend an average of 50 minutes a day on its apps - Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram.

The figure was seen as a sign of the internet behemoth's astonishing success, as well as its growing influence over our lives. But two years is a long time, especially in social media land.

On Wednesday night, Facebook's founder Mark Zuckerberg said users are spending in total 50 million hours less a day on Facebook. That works out at a 5pc reduction in time, or two minutes per person.

Facebook framed the decline as a good thing: a result of recently-made changes to the news feed that decrease the number of viral videos users see, and encourage sharing with friends and family.

"The most important driver of our business has never been time spent by itself," Zuckerberg said. "Time in news feed interacting with people is more valuable than...

Twitter's updated harassment policies to come in effect from November 22

ver the last month, Twitter has drawn ire from users all over the world for not doing enough to combat against hate speech, trolls and online harassment. The social media platform, in all fairness, has responded with announcement of several steps to tackle the problem. Now, it has announced that the new set of rules will come in effect from November 22.
In a tweet posted from @TwitterSafety account, the company said, "We will now launch our policies on violent groups and hateful imagery and hate symbols on Nov 22. During the development process, we received valuable feedback that we're implementing before these are published and enforced."
In a series of tweets published, Twitter further explained how it has updated the non-consensual nudity policy to better protect victims. "We've updated our non-consensual nudity policy to better protect victims by expanding the types of content we remove, harsher penalties for offenders, and more rigorous review for accounts that post this type of media," the tweet mentioned.
Last week, Twitter also published a blog post explaining why it takes time to implement new rules and regulations. "We write one set of rules for the hundreds of millions of people who use Twitter and the hundreds of millions of Tweets sent every day. Given that scale, we've built a process that gives us time to recognize the impact of what these changes mean for everyone," the blog post had noted.
The blog post further referred to how the company gets inputs from a diverse set of people from across the world. "We gather input from around the world so that we can consider diverse, global perspectives around the changing nature of online speech, including how our rules are applied and interpreted in different cultural and social contexts."
"Making a policy change requires in-depth research around trends in online behavior, developing language that sets expectations around what's allowed, and reviewer guidelines that can be enforced across millions of Tweets."
On October 14, Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey had also posted a series of tweets underlying Twitter's seriousness to tackle online hate, abuse and harassment

Which of the big three tech giants will be the first to hit $1 trillion valuation? (And why should you care?)

mazon, Google and Apple are all in the running to become the first ever company to be valued at one trillion dollars, with analysts believing we could see history being made as early as this year.

Becoming a “trillion dollar company” will have implications beyond than the business world. It could cement customer loyalty to these brands, enhancing a perception of quality. It will also throw up myriad questions about competition, regulation, and privacy.

Greater scale could mean these companies are able to create more creative products and services. We could see technology giants like Apple ramping up their aims to tackle major healthcare issues like diabetes, or Google stepping up its secretive artificial intelligence division.

On the other hand, greater ability to buy out rival businesses could grant a single company more power than ever before, and is a potential concern for governments...

A successful SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch gives NASA new options

BONYEZA APO CHINI KAMA HUJAIONA IYO VIDEO ILI UIDOWNLOAD SASA IVI
A successful SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch gives NASA new options

SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy rocket will launch for the first time next week. It might be the company’s most anticipated mission yet, and it could open up a new line of business — one that might interest NASA.

The new rocket will be the most powerful in the world, which means it could launch heavier and more complex cargo to space. Once the vehicle becomes operational, SpaceX could soon start launching what the company’s Falcon 9 can’t: heavier national security satellites, large habitats and telescopes, or even humans to deep space

The Falcon Heavy’s specs are impressive. The three-core rocket boasts 27 engines, more than any other working rocket has used before. Together, these engines provide more than 5 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, allowing the vehicle to put more than 140,000 pounds of cargo into lower Earth orbit. That’s more than twice the capability of any rocket currently on the market. And it will do almost as much as NASA’s new huge rocket at a fraction of the price.

Thanks to a directive from the Trump administration, NASA is now focused on returning humans to the Moon. The space agency has been developing its own massive rocket, the Space Launch System, which could be used for lunar missions. When complete, the SLS will be even more powerful than the Falcon Heavy. However, the giant NASA rocket has its share of problems: it’s still years from making its first flight, and won’t carry people until 2022 at the earliest. Plus, early estimates show that the SLS may cost more than 10 times as much to fly than the Falcon Heavy. Incorporating a cheaper rocket may make human Moon missions more affordable.

The SLS has strong support from key members of Congress, so NASA will likely continue to develop it. But once the Falcon Heavy starts flying regularly, the cheap, powerful rocket may be hard for NASA to ignore. “This could make the whole Trump administration initiative to go back to the Moon economically affordable,” Charles Miller, president of space consulting firm NexGen Space LLC and a former member of the Trump administration’s NASA transition team, tells The Verge.

HIV-test kits given to women boost testing in men

Providing HIV self-test kits to women seeking care in healthcare facilities could promote HIV testing among couples and male partners, a study says.
According to researchers from Kenya and the United States, men in Sub-Saharan Africa tend to have lower rates of HIV testing than women.
Thus, the researchers determined whether providing HIV self-test to women aged 18 to 39 years old who visited antenatal and post-pregnancy clinics in Kisumu, Kenya between June 2015 and January 2016 could encourage their partners to test for HIV.
“There’s a greater potential for these tests to be used more widely in high prevalence countries.”

Love Games try to help raise awareness of HIV in Zambia

BONYEZA APO CHINI KAMA HUJAIONA IYO VIDEO ILI UIDOWNLOAD SASA IVI
Love Games try to help raise awareness of HIV in Zambia

[LUSAKA] At the Munali Secondary School in Lusaka, an unusual youth club is under way. All eyes are on Humphrey Chileshe, a facilitator who uses sign language to lead an open and frank discussion on topics that are usually taboo here in Zambia, such as promiscuity, abuse, HIV and contraception.

For the young people in the group, most of whom are deaf and are not reached by other HIV prevention campaigns, the session provides a welcome opportunity to gain knowledge and share experiences.

This 'Safe Love' club is part of a wider campaign, run by a USAID-funded programme called Communications Support for Health (CSH), which centres on a popular TV drama called Love Games.

As Zambians around the country tune in to episode one of the second series tonight, the hope is that they will get more than pure diversion from a storyline packed with sex and scandal.

Love Games is an 'edutainment' show that uses a juicy plot and high production values as a conduit for health promotion and, in particular, behavioural change around sexual relationships in young people for whom HIV is a daily reality.

Launched in January, the show is scripted around the key drivers of HIV in Zambia: concurrent sexual partners, low condom use and mother-to-child transmission. The second series will also touch on the topical issue of voluntary male circumcision.

The plot focuses on five couples living in the Zambian capital Lusaka, where HIV prevalence is over 20 per cent, compared with the national average of 14.3 per cent.

Florence Mulenga, capacity building director at CSH, says the messages in the programme have been carefully selected following scientific research into drivers of behaviour change.

Love Games actor Pastor Kangwa Chileshe says the show addresses personal risk perception in the younger population. "People know about HIV now, but there is a disconnect between that and their own behaviours," he says.

To this end, social media sites such as Facebook and YouTube are also being used to provide a platform for young people to discuss the issues covered in each episode. Safe Love clubs like the one in Munali also run on a weekly basis across the country.

Science academies should influence education in Africa

Science academies should influence education in Africa

African science academies largely provide evidence-based scientific advice for policymaking, but need to influence educational systems to produce science and entrepreneurship-oriented graduates, a conference has heard.

The regional conference on balanced and inclusive education (BIE) aimed to offer suggestions for addressing Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4, which encourages inclusive and quality education.

The meeting, which was hosted in Lagos on 25-26 July by the Nigerian Academy of Science in collaboration with Switzerland-based nongovernmental organisation Education Relief Foundation, was attended by 30 senior decision-makers in Africa, Latin America, Asia and Europe.

According to the conference, science academies are the highest scientific institutions of a given country, and using them to influence educators to promote indigenous knowledge, innovation and entrepreneurship in training students could aid sustainable development.
“African graduates may have excellent degrees in theory but they lack the practical, innovation [skills] and ability to think outside the box.”
Kalu Mosto Onuoha
According to Kalu Mosto Onuoha, the president of the NAS, it is unfortunate that African countries are not doing well in BIE. He noted that the continent needs to impart innovation and entrepreneurship to students.

“We don’t have enough hands-on training,” said Onuoha, a professor of geology at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. “[African graduates] may have excellent degrees in theory but they lack the practical, innovation [skills] and ability to think outside the box. That is not inclusivity.”

He added that even when graduates with top grades are employed, their quality is often found wanting.

Apple's iPhone 8 launch in Sydney sees bleak turnout

Apple Inc’s iPhone 8 launch in Sydney, one of the first cities to access the product in Australia, saw a bleak turnout as fans held out for the soon-to-be-released premium iPhone X.
Hundreds of people usually gather at Apple’s Sydney city store with queues winding down the town’s main street, George Street, when there is a new product release. On Friday, there were fewer than 30 people lining up before the store opened, according to a Reuters witness.
Mazen Kourouche, the first in queue after lining up 11 days outside the store so that he could buy and review the product on YouTube, said there were modest refinements.
“(It) is pretty similar to the iPhone 7 but it shoots 4k 60 frames per second and it’s got a new glass back instead of the metal which is apparently more durable,” he told Reuters. “There aren’t too many new features to this one.”
Poor reviews of the iPhone 8, which comes 10 years after Apple released the first version of the revolutionary phone, drove down shares of the company to near two-month lows of $152.75 on Thursday, as investors worried pre-orders for the device had come in well below previous launches.
The iPhone 8 will only cater to those who want a new version but do not want to pay a hefty $999 for the iPhone X, said iTWire.com’s technology editor Alex Zaharov-Reutt, who did not line up for the launch.

The public federal prosecutor in the Brazilian state of Amazonas said on Wednesday the court there froze 38 million reais ($11.7 million) of funds held in Facebook Inc’s account for failing to comply with a court order to supply data on users of the company’s WhatsApp messaging service who are under criminal investigation.

The prosecutor’s office said the funds frozen correspond to the fines for failing to comply with court order to turn over data.
Facebook representatives were not immediately available for comment.
In the most recent decision, the court rejected Facebook’s defense that the data of users was the responsibility of telephone and internet service operators in the United States and Ireland, which would require international cooperation.
Prosecutor Alexandre Jabur, author of the order, said Facebook has shown enormous disregard for Brazilian institutions, especially the courts, prosecutors and police in not meeting court orders.
Brazilian courts have shut down the popular WhatsApp messaging service nationwide three times since December

New Nokia 8 phones are seen in this HMD Global handout picture obtained by Reuters August 16, 2017. HMD Global/Handout via Reuters

The Android device, due out in September, will potentially beat rivals on price but will still face fierce competition, with Apple’s highly anticipated 10th anniversary iPhone also expected next month and Samsung’s Galaxy Note 8 set to hit the market next week.
With a suggested price tag of around 599 euros ($703), the Nokia 8 undercuts Apple, which typically offers a stripped down version of its latest phones for a similar price but charges hundreds of euros more for memory and key features.
The new top-of-the-line Nokia sports a dual-sight video feature which enables simultaneous live-streaming on social media networks from both front and rear cameras on a split screen. It has licensed lens technology from camera maker Zeiss.
It is the most high-end phone so far from HMD, which was set up late last year and made a splash in May when it revived Nokia’s classic 3310 feature handset in new brightly colored versions

Join Free,Group whatsapp Google buys plot near Apple's planned Danish data center

WhatsApp, a popular messaging service owned by Facebook Inc, suffered a widespread global outage on Wednesday that lasted for several hours before being resolved, the company said.Apple said in July it would spend around $950 million to build a center with a planned opening in 2019. If Google follows suit it would make the area one of the world’s largest data center hubs, the local municipality Aabenraa said.
“This is great news,” Denmark’s energy minister Lars Christian Lilleholt told Reuters on Friday.
“It signals that Google has plans in Denmark, and I think it’s because we have some of Europe’s lowest power prices for companies, some of the greenest energy, and a high security of supply,” he said in a telephone interview.
Facebook in January announced plans to build a data center in Odense in central Denmark, its third outside of the United States.
Besides its new 131 hectare (324 acres) plot in Aabenraa Google also owns a 73 plot in Fredericia, 80 kilometers (50 miles) north of Aabenraa.
Google has no plans for the lots yet, but wanted to secure the possibility to expand its data centers in Europe if required, a spokeswoman told Reuters.
Apple has about 50 media partners that supply content to its Apple TV and on the television app on its popular iPhone. But Amazon.com Inc’s (AMZN.O) service, which includes hit shows like “Transparent,” has been a notable absence from Apple’s hardware.

A Facebook defends itself against critics of social media

Facebook Inc on Friday struck back against scientific researchers and tech industry insiders who have criticized the world’s biggest social media network and its competitors for transforming how people behave and express emotion

Facebook, in a corporate blog post, said that social media can be good for people’s well-being if they use the technology in a way that is active, such as messaging with friends, rather than passive, such as scrolling through a feed of other people’s posts.

It was the second time this week that Facebook had published such a rebuttal, signaling a new willingness to defend a business model that translates users’ attention into advertising revenue

Apps to get followers on Instagram

"Followers Pro for Instagram is a great tool that I have used to analyze people that are already interacting with my Instagram posts. It's not a great tool to actually gain followers, but offers a more behind the scenes look that I can understand how my content retains followers. I really recommend this app to take a look at your analytics and improve your content from there."

.How I Switched from iOS to Android and I’m Enjoying It

How I Switched from iOS to Android and I’m Enjoying It
Recently I was so disappointed by Apple that I decided to switch from iOS to Android. I was an iPhone user for many years, starting from the iPhone 3G. I always loved the image of Apple as a maker of products for the creative professionals?—?designers, visual artists, musicians: “the troublemakers, the rebels”. But I think this narrative is now over, and Apple lost its touch with their former main user base. They are now all about money and they are focusing on making “premium” products for the rich people, and that's it. Good for them. Now every middle manager wants to use a MacBook in their mostly PCs companies, because it’s a symbol of status today. And they are using it to just run Outlook and Microsoft Office.

Apple confirms iPhones with older batter  will take hits in performance

Reddit users have noticed that Apple appears to be slowing down old iPhones that have low-capacity batteries. While many iPhone users have experienced perceived slowdowns due to iOS updates over the years, it appears that there’s now proof Apple is throttling processor speeds when a battery capacity deteriorates over time.
Geekbench developer John Poole has mapped out performance for the iPhone 6S and iPhone 7 over time, and has come to the conclusion that Apple’s iOS 10.2.1 and 11.2.0 updates introduce this throttling for different devices. iOS 10.2.1 is particularly relevant, as this update was designed to reduce random shutdown issues for the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6S. Apple’s fix appears to be throttling the CPU to prevent the phone from randomly shutting down. Geekbench reports that iOS 11.2.0 introduces similar throttling for iPhone 7 units with older batteries

Intel’s processors have a security bug and the fix could slow down PCs

A security flaw in Intel processors has led to a redesign of Linux and Windows kernels. Programmers have been busy for the past two months patching the Linux kernel’s virtual memory system to protect against a hardware bug in Intel CPUs that could let attackers exploit security weaknesses and access security keys, passwords, and files cached from a disk. The Register reports that software updates are required for both Windows and Linux systems, and performance of a machine will be affected.

Reports suggest information around the specific bug has been kept confidential between software and hardware vendors, and patches for the Linux kernel include comments that have been redacted to prevent attackers discovering the precise weakness. The security bug could be present on Intel processors manufactured over the past 10 years, meaning many systems will require updates

Chrome OS will soon be able to run Android apps in the background

One of the biggest shortcomings of Chrome OS, and a drawback to using a mobile and web-first operating system, is applications that don’t act like desktop software should. Google is working to remedy this, according to 9to5Google, with an upcoming update to Chrome OS that should make Android apps run smoothly in the background. Currently, these apps — part of Google’s broader push to unify certain aspects of Android and Chrome — will pause if you switch away from them, creating some issues for people who like to heavily multitask on desktop.

ChromeUnboxed first noticed the feature, called Android Parallel Tasks, within Chrome OS 64, which is currently only available on Google’s beta channel. We can expect the feature to make its way to the public version of Chrome OS some time in the near future, but it’s not clear exactly when. Still, it’s refreshing to see that Google is taking steps to make Android apps on Chrome OS more robust and desktop-like, especially after the

Hisense’s 2018 smart TVs are getting Amazon Alexa

Hisense — the world’s third-largest TV manufacturer — is starting to preview its 2018 lineup of smart TVs that’ll be announcing at CES this year. The big addition this time around seems to be Amazon’s Alexa smart assistant, which is coming to some existing models, including the 100-inch 4K laser TV that the company announced late last year.

In addition to the usual suite of Alexa features for music playback, smart home controls, and third-party skills, Hisense says that users will be able to directly control their TV’s hardware, using Alexa to do tasks like change inputs or control volume with voice commands.

While the company hasn’t detailed yet which models of its lineup will be getting Alexa integration, expect more details on that news next week at CES. Hisense isn’t the only TV company promising new smart assistant integration for its 2018 models, either — LG has already announced that it’ll be bringing Google Assistant over to its new OLED displays at CES, too.

Samsung’s new curved monitor has Thunderbolt 3

Samsung’s new curved monitor has Thunderbolt 3

Thunderbolt 3, the high-bandwidth interconnect that works using the USB-C connector, is still struggling to break into the mainstream, but Samsung is giving it a helpful nudge today. Announced in the buildup to CES 2018, the latest curved QLED monitor from Samsung supports Thunderbolt 3, allowing it to both receive video from your laptop and charge it with up to 85W of power. It has the unglamorous title of CJ791 and measures in at 34 inches diagonally, with a 21:9 aspect ratio, 3,440 x 1,440 resolution, and a 4ms response time.

The big advantage of Thunderbolt 3 is in streamlining the number and size of cables required to connect a series of peripherals to your computer. Combined with Samsung’s minimal design of the CJ791 and a USB-C laptop, it promises to deliver some extremely tidy and efficient desktop working environments. Samsung has yet to disclose the full specs, price, and availability of the CJ791, holding on to those details until the monitor’s full unveiling at CES in Las Vegas next week
